A discussion on Antonia's blog about the forthcoming local elections has brought up the question of whether or not there will be a national swing or local factors, and whether the Labour vote will be affected by the conduct of the Blair Government.
About a decade ago I remember a Labour Party Election Broadcast for the local elections whose message was very simple - "If you want to tell the Prime Minister he's doing a bad job, you can't just walk into 10 Downing Street and speak to him. But you can vote against his party in the local elections."
(A special prize to anyone who can remember which year this Party Election Broadcast was made.)
Is anyone surprised by the rotten turnouts and complete apathy towards local government when even party election campaigns focus on issues other than their ability to run our town halls.
