BBC News reports that the Vatican 'may relax condom rules'. If this is true it will be the first great revolution of the Benedict XVI era. Only last year the Pope was opposing their use in Africa. The Roman Catholic Church has often been accused of using its influence to spread the belief that condoms do not block the spread of HIV, and using influence to prevent their distribution in the third world.
If the Roman Catholic Church is shifting its position then this is long overdue. Maybe the papcy of Benedict XVI will prove to be a bit more enlightened than many expected upon his election.
